Applicable Products

  • NetScaler Gateway
  • StoreFront
  • Web Interface

Symptoms or Error

The following error is displayed when connecting to StoreFront/Web Interface through NetScaler Gateway:
401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials

Solution

Complete the following troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue:

Ita Nyp Org Citrix For Mac
  1. Verify the single sign-on (SSO) domain. If the FQDN is used for the SSO domain, change it to corresponding NetBios name.
    For example, 'mydomain.net' to 'mydomain'.

  2. If using WI on NetScaler, verify the Session Profile->Client Experience->Plugin Type setting is set to 'Java'. Otherwise it should be Windows/MAC.
  3. Verify the callback from the Web Interface server.
    • Open a web browser on the Web Interface server and enter the FQDN of the NetScaler Gateway.
You must get the NetScaler Gateway landing page from that server. If not, there is a callback issue.
    • Enter the IP address of the NetScaler Gateway to see if the landing page can be reached. If you are unable to reach the landing page, then there is a DNS resolution issue.
Note: The Web Interface server must be able to reach the VIP of the NetScaler Gateway for the callback to work.
You might not allow the traffic from the farm to go outside, or your DNS only has an entry to resolve to the Public IP. So the Web Interface server will try to contact the Public IP of the NetScaler Gateway during the callback. If you are not allowing internal traffic to reach outside, this breaks the callback.

  4. To resolve the preceding issue, add a Hosts entry on the Web Interface server pointing to the Internal IP address of the NetScaler Gateway VIP. For example: FQDN of the NetScaler Gateway is 'myagee.com' and NetScaler Gateway VIP internal IP is: '10.0.0.1'.

  5. Ensure that the Root CA and Intermediates are installed in the certificate store.
The Root CA and Intermediates must be installed on a device in the domain such as the Web Interface, StoreFront server, Domain Controller, or any server in the domain. The updated Root CA or Intermediates might not get installed occasionally, if you do not allow regular updates or if you are using a Self-Signed certificate. For more information, refer to - HOW TO: Install Imported Certificates on a Web Server in Windows Server 2003.

  6. Verify if there is a missing Root CA and Intermediate certificate link on the NetScaler Gateway. Ensure that the link is correct. Usually when you update the expired certificates, the new certificates have different Root and Intermediate certificates.

  7. Examine the priorities of the policies configured on NetScaler and also verify if these policies are being hit.
Refer to the following article for information on how to verify if a particular policy is being hit; CTX138840 - NetScaler Commands to Find the Policy Hits for NetScaler Gateway Session Policies.

  8. Instead of using just the username to log on, try using both domainusername. This issue is seen when a user is in different domain than the one configured on NetScaler Gateway.

  9. Verify the TLS version that Web Interface is using to communicate. In some cases NetScaler Gateway virtual server is only configured for TLS 1.1/1.2 while Web Interface is trying to communicate with TLS 1.0.
Use a network trace between NetScaler Gateway and Web Interface or StoreFront to determine the TLS version being used to communicate. Refer to CTX116557 - How to Decrypt SSL and TLS Traffic Using Wireshark for decrypting the trace.

  10. When logging on or launching a published application, a user is required to set a new password if the current password is expired. When a new password is set, the error “Invalid Credentials” appears. This is a known behavior and limitation in few versions of Receiver for iOS. Although the error message appears, the new password is correctly set. The error message can be ignored. Use the new password during the next log on.

  11. Verify if the users can log on internally bypassing NetScaler Gateway. If yes, then it should be a problem with NetScaler Gateway. Examine the user account used for accessing the published applications through NetScaler Gateway. Make sure the user account is not locked.

  12. When using NetScaler Gateway appliance for load balancing, it is important to double check the load balancing algorithm and the persistence method and timeout.
To avoid the error, Citrix recommends that you configure a timeout of 0 (zero). This causes the appliance to maintain a user persistence session until the user logs off the NetScaler Gateway session or the web browser is closed.
To configure timeout value for persistence method, run the following command from the command line interface of the appliance:
    > set lb vserver vservername -persistenceType COOKIEINSERT -timeout 0
