Sep 30, 2017  I tried doing a ubuntu install, but my G5 said something about not being able to find a place to mount it and 'no mountable system files' so much for a operating system install being easy. Anyway, does anyone know what is causing this issue, and how to fix it?

Virtual PC for Mac lets you run Microsoft Windows applications, access Windows networks, use Windows-only Internet applications, and share files with Windows-based colleagues. Virtual PC for Mac employs standard Mac controls and commands. It gives you the flexibility to work across platforms--side by side--without changing your Mac OS, software or files. Say goodbye to compatibility issues. Virtual PC for Mac lets you have the best of both worlds.

This is the full .DMG of Virtual PC 7.0.2 for Mac OS X (first download link) and its German version (second download link). It will not run under Mac OS 9, but Mac OS X only. This allows you to run Windows, Linux and any other virtual machine on a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor. Please note this program is now considered abandonware because Microsoft no longer supports the product. The last update for this program was released in September of 2007, which is version 7.0.3 (provided in the third download link, working for all languages). Microsoft is no longer selling the product because of Apple's switch to Intel. There is no license required. You need to burn the .DMG file to a CD to install it. You can't just mount and install it will ask you to insert a CD.
[comment by user almightyM: I never had to burn it, for me it always did work by simply mounting the image. I did it that way in 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard.]

Tips:

  1. For Linux guests, use vga=<mode> to set the guests screen resolution.

Known issues:

  1. Leopard users will want to modify VirtualPCNetworking1040.kext, to prevent it from appearing in the dock. (modified kext for version 7.0.3 in fourth link, just copy to /Library/Extensions and replace old one)
  2. Under Windows XP guests, Internet Explorer 8 does not display rendered pages correctly, instead just a white page is shown. Enabling compatibility updates may fix this problem.
  3. If under a Linux guest the (wheel) mouse is not detected correctly (kernels 2.6 and newer), use the kernel parameters i8042.noloop and psmouse.proto=imps to correct wrong AUX port (/dev/psaux) detection.
  4. Linux kernel versions from 3.4.3 (17 June 2012) onward mistook the emulated IDE controller for the one included in Hyper-V and ignored the hard disk drive. This was corrected with a fix (18 September 2012) which went into kernels 3.8 (released 18 February 2013) and 3.4.36 (released 14 March 2013) and newer. However, Linux as a guest system can still be used with affected kernels by adding the kernel parameter ata_piix.prefer_ms_hyperv=0

Other Virtual PC versions:1.0b6 and 1.0fc2, 2.0 and 2.1.3, 3.0 upgrade & 3.0.3, 4.0, 5.0 and 5.0.4, and 6.0.

Compatibility

Which Macs can boot Windows?

All of the Intel-based Macs can boot a version of Windows. This includes the MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Pro models as well as Intel powered systems from the iMac and Mac mini lines. Intel-based Macs also can run Windows, or Windows programs, through a 'virtualization' solution like Parallels Desktop for Mac, VMWare Fusion, or CrossOver Mac.

Also see: Which Intel Macs are capable of booting the 32-Bit and 64-Bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7? Which are supported by Apple's Boot Camp?

Which versions of Windows can you install on an Intel-based Mac?

The original 'XOM hack' made it possible to install the 32-bit version of Windows XP Pro. One user in The OSX86 Project forums modified the originally released hack to work with Windows Media Center 2005 as well.

The final version of Boot Camp 2.0 provided with MacOS X 10.5 'Leopard' was designed to support Windows XP Home and Pro with SP2 or later as well as all versions of Windows Vista. Boot Camp 3.1 -- which is included with MacOS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard' -- was designed to support 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 on a variety of Macs. Readers and bloggers reported installing a variety of additional operating systems as well.

Parallels Desktop for Mac supports effectively every version of Windows, as well as Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, OS/2 Warp, eComStation, Solaris, and MS-DOS 'in secure virtual machines running alongside Mac OS X'. VMWare Fusion likewise supports an exhaustive list of operating systems including every version of Windows as well as a variety of flavors of Linux. VirtualBox also supports a complete list divided into Windows, Linux, and Unix 'families'.

Will a Mac running Windows be subject to Windows viruses/spyware?

Yes. It is important to recognize that an Intel-based Mac when booting Windows via Boot Camp is for all practical purposes the same as a Windows 'PC'.

Mac OS X Lion Download Conclusion. There are multiple versions of the Mac Lion available in the internet as DMG or Torrent. In case you already have one, then a simple download on your device would suffice for all the needs of a present day Mac user. How about Roman web designer Alessio Atzeni’s spiritual followup, which emulates Mac OS X Lion’s boot, login and desktop screens using only CSS3 properties, and no image files at all. The boot up sequence of an Apple Mac is an iconic thing. Everyone knows what that white screen and grey Apple logo means, and when that OS X wallpaper pops up you can even guess which version of the operating system you are using. Mac os x lion online emulator Mac Os X Lion with CSS3 Experiment - I wanted to create with only use of CSS3 the boot, the login page and finally the desktop of the Mac OS X Lion. The principal variant of Mac OS X was Mac OS X Lion. Macintosh OS X lion – 1.2v3 depended on Rhapsody, a half and half of OPENSTEP from NeXT Computer and Mac OS 8.5.1. The GUI resembled a blend of Mac OS 8’s Platinum appearance with OPENSTEP’s NeXT-based interface.

On one hand, if Windows is installed and running on an Intel-based Mac, the system can take advantage of additional applications and games that are available for the Windows platform, but it also can be compromised in the same ways that can harm any other Windows PC.

In the company FAQ, Parallels likewise notes that:

Parallels Desktop for Mac runs the guest OS in a special virtualized environment that emulates a separate computer. This virtualized computer is as vulnerable to the viruses as a usual PC running Windows. We highly recommend that you install some anti-virus software and firewall in the guest OS.

VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox effectively operate in the same way and can be impacted in the same manner as Parallels Desktop for Mac.

Can you install Windows on a PowerPC-based Mac?

Late model PowerPC-based Macs cannot boot Windows like Intel-based Macs. However, these systems are capable of running a variety of versions of Windows in emulation, which is substantially slower.

The best known solution is the discontinued Microsoft Virtual PC 7 which was offered both with Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional. Microsoft describes the software as 'the application that makes it possible for you to access PC-only software, files, networks and devices from your Mac' and notes that version seven is 'compatible with [PowerPC G5-based systems and] offers important improvements in support, speed and reliability.'

You also might wish to evaluate Lismore Guest PC.

OpenOSX WinTel is available in a 'smart Universal Binary' to run on both PowerPC-based and Intel-based Macs. Rather than emulating Windows it provides 'full Pentium emulation'. It ships with a variety of open-source operating systems, but commercial operating systems such as Windows can be used as well. The website notes that Windows XP is compatible, but recommends Windows 98 for PowerPC-based systems.

Lismore Guest PC also emulates an 'x86 PC', comes bundled with DOS, and is ready for you to buy and install Windows with a 'built-in Windows Setup Assistant'.
